Stause was born at Draffenville in Kentucky. She was a student at Murray State University and received her B.A. She began performing in theatre in 2003. The name she chose for her middle name, "Chrishell", is an evocative term created from the unusual circumstances surrounding her birth. Her mother had her baby at an Shell station, and Chris assisted with the delivery. But in her book Strause does not deny the gossip surrounding her birth. She also mentioned that her mother was having car troubles and pulled into an oil station. In the waiting area at the car station, she went into pre-labor and the car attendant genuinely helped her to reach a hospital. Strause was born in hospital. Her mother who was half Japanese/half Spanish, split up before she knew she was pregnant. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause skipped a whole year of middle school as she was forced into the tent. Strause told her story about taking her hair to the river and hiding from her peers, and how she used food stamps. Her parents were struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Strause was 10 years old when she joined the Worldwide Church of God. Strause says her mother was having a self-righteous and free spirit. Her mother didn't have an occupation that was steady.
